🌟 Direct and Indirect Speech (सिधा और परोक्ष वचन)


🔹 Definition in English:


Direct Speech: When we report someone's exact words using quotation marks (“ ”).


Indirect Speech: When we report what someone said without using exact words or quotation marks.


🔹 Definition in Hindi:


Direct Speech (सीधा वचन): जब किसी के कहे हुए शब्दों को जैसे के तैसे दोहराया जाता है।


Indirect Speech (परोक्ष वचन): जब किसी के कहे हुए शब्दों को अपने शब्दों में बताया जाता है।


🗣️ Basic Structure:


Type Example Hindi Meaning


Direct Speech He said, “I am tired.” उसने कहा, “मैं थक गया हूँ।”

Indirect Speech He said that he was tired. उसने कहा कि वह थक गया था।


🧠 Conversion Rules (बदलाव के नियम)


1. Comma ( , ) और Quotation (“ ”) हट जाते हैं।


2. That लगाया जाता है (कई बार ज़रूरी नहीं)।


3. Tense बदलता है (अगर reporting verb “said” या “told” past में हो)।


4. Pronouns बदलते हैं (I → he/she, my → his/her)।


5. Time Words बदलते हैं:


now → then


today → that day


tomorrow → the next day


yesterday → the previous day


here → there



🧩 Examples (उदाहरणों के साथ)


🗨️ 1. Simple Statements (साधारण वाक्य)

She said, “I like coffee.” She said that she liked coffee. उसने कहा कि उसे कॉफ़ी पसंद है।

He said, “I am studying.” He said that he was studying. उसने कहा कि वह पढ़ रहा था।

They said, “We play cricket.” They said that they played cricket. उन्होंने कहा कि वे क्रिकेट खेलते हैं।


🗨️ 2. Questions (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)


Direct Indirect Hindi


He said, “Where are you going?” He asked where I was going. उसने पूछा कि मैं कहाँ जा रहा था।

She said, “Do you like apples?” She asked if I liked apples. उसने पूछा कि क्या मुझे सेब पसंद हैं।


🔸 Note: Question marks (?) हट जाते हैं और “if” या “whether” लग सकता है।


🗨️ 3. Commands / Orders (आदेश या अनुरोध)


Direct Indirect Hindi


He said, “Open the door.” He told me to open the door. उसने मुझसे दरवाज़ा खोलने को कहा।

The teacher said, “Don’t talk.” The teacher told us not to talk. शिक्षक ने हमें बात न करने को कहा।

She said, “Please help me.” She requested me to help her. उसने मुझसे मदद करने का अनुरोध किया।


🗨️ 4. Exclamations (भावनात्मक वाक्य)


Direct Indirect Hindi


He said, “Wow! What a movie!” He exclaimed with joy that it was a great movie. उसने खुशी से कहा कि वह बहुत अच्छी फ़िल्म थी।

She said, “Alas! He is dead.” She exclaimed sadly that he was dead. उसने दुख के साथ कहा कि वह मर गया था।


🔁 Tense Changes (काल परिवर्तन)


Direct Speech Indirect Speech


Simple Present → Simple Past “I eat rice.” → He said he ate rice.

Present Continuous → Past Continuous “I am eating.” → He said he was eating.

Present Perfect → Past Perfect “I have done it.” → He said he had done it.

Simple Past → Past Perfect “I went there.” → He said he had gone there.


🎯 Quick Tip:


अगर Reporting Verb (said/told) Present या Future Tense में है, तो Tense नहीं बदलता।


🧩 Example:


He says, “I am tired.” → He says that he is tired.


She will say, “I like sweets.” → She will say that she likes sweets.


🧭 Basic Rule:


When the reporting verb (said, told, asked, etc.) is in past tense,

→ the tense of reported speech usually goes one step back.


If the reporting verb is in present or future tense,

→ no tense change happens.

Simple Past Past Perfect He said, “I saw him.” → He said that he had seen him.

Past Continuous Past Perfect Continuous She said, “I was sleeping.” → She said that she had been sleeping.

Past Perfect (No change) He said, “I had finished my work.” → He said that he had finished his work.

Past Perfect Continuous (No change) She said, “I had been studying.” → She said that she had been studying.

Future (will) would He said, “I will go.” → He said that he would go.

Future Continuous (will be) would be She said, “I will be waiting.” → She said that she would be waiting.

Future Perfect (will have) would have He said, “I will have done it.” → He said that he would have done it.

🧩 Examples


1. She said, “I am happy.”

→ She said that she was happy.



2. He said, “I have finished my homework.”

→ He said that he had finished his homework.



3. They said, “We will come tomorrow.”

→ They said that they would come the next day.



4. He said, “I can solve this problem.”

→ He said that he could solve that problem.
